Conference 'Towards a climate proof society'

On 27 November 2008, the Knowledge for Climate programme together with the Climate changes Spatial Planning Research programme organised the conference Towards a climate proof society in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. 
 
International speakers were Ken Livingstone (former Mayor of London), James Hansen (a world leading climate scientist involved in the climate policy debate).

Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende received the brochure "Staat van het Klimaat 2007" which gives an overview of the scientific climate change research and climate policy in the Netherlands, during the year 2007.

The Dutch Delta Committee has been asked to advise about the protection of the Netherlands against climate change. The advice was published on 3 September 2008. Safety against floods and an attractive place to live were the main focuses of the report. Water management was the main emphasis: protection against floods and security of the availability of drinking water.

Climate change is one of the major environmental issues for the coming years, both regionally and globally. The Netherlands are expected to face climate change impacts on all land use related sectors and on water management, and therefore on spatial planning in general. The programme “Climate changes Spatial Planning” focuses to enhance joint-learning between those to communities and people in practice within spatial planning. It's mission is to get climate change and climate variability one of the guiding principles for spatial planning in the Netherlands.
